The Financing of Political Parties Bill is currently under preparation, says Prime Minister

GIS - 25 July, 2018: The Ministerial Committee on Electoral Reform has already submitted its report with proposals on, inter-alia, the introduction of a dose of Proportional Representation in the National Assembly, enhancing women representation and on the issue of mandatory declaration of community by prospective candidates at a general election.
The Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit and Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, gave this reply yesterday in the National Assembly while answering a Parliamentary Question on electoral reforms.
With regard to the Financing of Political Parties Bill, Prime Minister Jugnauth highlighted that it is currently under preparation at the Attorney General’s Office. As for the consultations and circulation of the Bill prior to its introduction into the National Assembly, he pointed out that he is personally in favour of having appropriate consultation on the draft Bill, while adding that he would also seek the guidance of Cabinet on the matter before proceeding.
The Prime Minister also pointed out that the Ministerial Committee on Electoral Reform has been addressing the other issues in its Terms of Reference. He further added that the proposals made by the Committee are currently being examined at the level of his Office before submission to Cabinet.
