President Royal society underpins importance of Science and Technology as key drivers for the economy
The President of the Royal Society, Sir Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, underpinned the importance of Science and Technology as the key drivers for the economy during a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, yesterday at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis, in the presence of the British High Commissioner, Mr Jonathan Drew.
In a statement after the visit, Sir Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, spoke about the difficulties a country might face in making a transition from a traditional economy to a knowledge-based and innovative economy.
Sir Venkatraman Ramakrishnan is a Group Leader of the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge and President of the Royal Society. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina (the German Academy of Sciences) and a Foreign Member of the Indian National Science Academy. He received the Louis-Jeantet Prize for medicine in 2007 and shared the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 2009
