Cabinet Decisions taken on 09 July 1999


1.Cabinet has considered and agreed to the recommendations made in the Report of the PRB on errors, omissions and clarifications, 1999. The Report is being made public. The PRB recommendations includes the award of one additional increment to all those officers who on conversion had benefited from a salary of less that Rs 5,000 p.m. in the PRB Report 1998. This measure will benefit some 15,000 officers other than part-time employees.

2.Miss Maurer who was a beneficiary of a five year secondary school scholarship under the Fishermen’s Children Scholarship Scheme has passed her S.C. Examinations brilliantly. Cabinet has considered that the passing away of the father of Miss Maurer, who was a registered fisherman, should not jeopardise the chances of a brilliant student and has accordingly agreed to the grant to her of an ex-gratia scholarship to enable her to pursue her studies at H.S.C. level.

3.Following a fall in the world market price of crude oil, and with a view to allow consumers to benefit, Cabinet has decided that the price of edible oil sold in quart be reduced from Rs 4.15 to Rs 3.80 per quart with effect from 10 July 1999.

4.Cabinet has approved the grant of 6 Export Enterprise Certificates, 1 Pioneer Status Enterprise Certificate, and 1 Modernisation & Expansion Enterprise Certificate under the Industrial Expansion Act, 1993. The implementation of the projects under these certificates would create some 283 job opportunities and would entail investment amounting to around Rs2.534 billion. These projects include the establishment of a major pharmaceutical enterprise for export purposes.

5.Cabinet has agreed to the introduction into the National Assembly of the Copyright (Amendment) Bill. The object of the Bill is to provide for better protection of copyright relating to judgements of courts of laws and tribunals.

6.Cabinet has agreed to additional criteria recommended by the Ministry of Housing and Lands for the allocation of NHDC housing units. These criteria will cater for new categories of applicants from the lower income groups who were up to now not eligible for NHDC houses.

7.Cabinet has been apprised that negotiations are under way for the selection of a strategic partner for the Central Water Authority. This partnership inter alia aims at a better management of our water supply with a view to providing potable water to consumers on a 24 hour basis.

8.Cabinet has been apprised that the Ministry of Arts & Culture is commissioning the construction of an Obelisk at Wooton, Curepipe as a monument to mark the passage into the third Millennium.

9.Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the recent mission of the Attorney-General to Namibia where he attended the First Meeting of Ministers of Justice and Attorneys-General for the SADC Legal Sector on 1st and 2nd July 1999.

10.Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the recent mission of the Minister of Telecommunications & Information Technology to South Africa and Botswana. In South Africa, the Minister attended the signing ceremony of the Optical Fibre Submarine Cable Project on 17 June 1999, whereas in Botswana, he attended the SADC Conference on the theme "Strengthening and Consolidation of Democracy through the Electoral Process" from 20 to 22 June 1999.
