Cabinet Decisions taken on 21 May, 1999


1.In 1992, the then Government declared a strike by DWC workers as illegal and some 650 workers were dismissed. Consequently a case was lodged in Court against that decision. The Court has now ruled in favour of the workers.
The Government has decided that the DWC should withdraw its appeal, accept the judgement and pay appropriate compensation to the workers whom it considers had been unduly penalised.

2.Cabinet has been apprised that the Fourth COMESA Summit of Heads of State and Government will be held in Nairobi, Kenya on 24 and 25 May, 1999. The Prime Minister has decided that Hon. R. Bheenick, Minister of Economic Development, Productivity and Regional Development, who is presently participating in the COMESA Council of Ministers’ Meeting, will head the Mauritian Delegation at the Summit.

3.Cabinet has agreed to the implementation of the Mauritius New Railway System Project under the Concessions Project Act. Invitations would soon be launched at international level for interested companies/consortiums to submit their bids for a pre-selection exercise.

4.Cabinet has agreed to the merger of the Farmers Service Corporation (FSC) and the Sugar Planters Mechanical Pool Corporation (SPMPC). An implementation Committee has been set up to enable the merging exercise to be carried out smoothly.

5.Cabinet has agreed to the grant of a Fishing Development Certificate to Under Control Trading Co. Ltd. following a recommendation made by the Fishing Development Committee. The Company will be engaged in long line fishing of Swordfish.

6.Cabinet has decided to make a token contribution of US$10,000 to the Republic of Mozambique following an international appeal made by Mozambique for assistance in order to help in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of affected areas following the recent floods there.

7.Cabinet has agreed to the Mauritius Telecom hosting the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation Seminar on New Satellite Services in Mauritius from 28 June to 2 July, 1999. Some 30 participants from Commonwealth African countries and the Indian Ocean Islands will be invited.

8.Cabinet has decided that the importation of coconut oil will no longer be restricted by quota, subject to an import permit being obtained from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and necessary clearance from the Ministry of Health & Quality of Life.

9.Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the Forum Francophone des Femmes Entrepreneurs de l"Ocean Indien organised by the Ministry of Women, Family Welfare and Child Development at La Pirogue Hotel, Flic en Flac, from 26 to 28 April, 1999. 42 Women Entrepreneurs from Comoros, Madagascar, Reunion, Seychelles and Rodrigues and 28 from Mauritius participated in the Forum.
The Forum culminated in a Declaration and an Action Plan identifying the main problems faced by women entrepreneurs of the Indian Ocean Islands which will be submitted to the Indian Ocean Commission and l’Agence de la Francophonie for their consideration and support.

10.Cabinet has taken note of the new arrangements that are being made by the Ministry of Arts and Culture for the provision of sound system to Ministries and Departments organising artistic and cultural activities.

11.Cabinet has taken note of the reconstitution of the Pesticides Control Board under the Chairmanship of Dr. R. Sibartie, Acting Consultant, Occupational Health Unit, Ministry of Health and Quality of Life.

12.Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the visit of the Minister of Public Utilities to UK from 7 to 14 May, 1999.

13.Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the mission of the Minister of Fisheries and Co-operatives in Tanzania to attend the Seventh SADC Marine Fisheries Minister’s Meeting held on 13 May, 1999.
