Cabinet Decisions taken on 23 July 1999


1. Cabinet has decided to set up an Anomalies Committee, in the wake of the PRB (Errors, Omissions and Clarification) Report 1999. The Committee will be presided by Mr. Dyachand Heeralall, CMG former Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of the Civil Service who will be assisted by two assessors.

2. Cabinet has taken note of the composition of the Law Reform Commission for the next three years as from 1999 under the chairmanship of Sir Hamid Moollan, QC.

3. Cabinet has agreed to a proposal from the Minister of Local Government to maintain the present policy whereby organisations involved in cultural, religious, social and sport activities will be exempted from the payment of the prescribed fees under the Local Government (Public Beaches) Regulations 1992 for the organisation of events of a non-commercial nature on public beaches.

4. Cabinet has agreed to a set of new measures being introduced by the Ministry of Fisheries and Co-operatives for the grant of import permits for seafood. These measures will help to streamline the procedures and at the same time ensure a more rapid processing of applications.

5. Cabinet has agreed to the holding in Mauritius from 2 to 5 August 1999 of a "Conflict Managements and Conflict Resolution Training Programme" organised by the Electoral Commissions Forum of SADC. The programme is meant for members of the Electoral Supervisory Commission and senior officials of the Electoral Commissioner’s Office. It will provide an exchange of experience in electoral process and will enhance the capacity of the participants in the organisation and supervision of elections.

6. Cabinet has agreed to a Regional Workshop on Engendering the Budget being held in Mauritius in February 2000. Some 40 participants from the Indian Ocean Islands are expected to attend the Workshop which will be financed by UNDP. The main objective of the Workshop will be to sensitise Governments to take into consideration issues affecting women when deciding on budgetary policies and measures.

7. Cabinet has taken note of the composition of the Board of Trustees of the St. Andrew’s College Foundation for 1999.

8. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the recent mission of Junior Minister V.K. Bojeenauth to Botswana where he attended a meeting of SADC Ministers of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources.
