Cabinet Decisions taken on 13 October 2000


1. Cabinet has agreed to the introduction into the National Assembly of the National Assembly (Allowances) (Amendment) Bill to provide for the payment of allowances to Parliamentary Private Secretaries.

2. Cabinet has been apprised of the proliferation of crows in large numbers over the country. Crows are known to attack other birds and destroy their eggs and act as carriers of diseases which may affect human beings. On the recommendation of a technical committee, Cabinet has agreed to the use of cages and poisoned bait under specific conditions to check the proliferation of crows.

3. Cabinet has approved the grant of a Fisheries Development Certificate to Gladius Ltée for an annual production of 300 tonnes of swordfish using long-line fishing technique, for local consumption and export to European countries. The project will involve investment to the tune of Rs 50M and provide direct employment to 33 persons.

4. Cabinet has agreed to Mauritius adhering to the United Nations Minimum Performance Standards adopted at the Global Programme against Money Laundering Forum held in March this year in Cayman Islands. This Commitment will enable Mauritius to benefit from technical assistance from the UN in its fight against money laundering

5. Cabinet has agreed to reintroduce the system of giving free medical treatment to a limited number of patients from Comoros and Seychelles.

6. Cabinet has taken note that the Southern and Eastern African Trade Information and Negotiations Initiative (SEATINI) will organise a workshop in Mauritius from 30 October to 3 November 2000. The objectives are to evaluate consultations held with the World Trade Organisation (WTO), facilitate dialogue between Government, the private sector, trade negotiators and experts in order to identify key areas of concern in the ongoing WTO negotiations and encourage high-level coordination within the region.

7. Cabinet has been apprised of the organisation of an Information, Communication and Technology Week "ICT Week" from 6 to 11 November at the Freeport of Mauritius Exhibition Centre, Mer Rouge. The ICT Week, which will be officially opened by the Prime Minister on 9 November will comprise firstly a series of workshops on various topics pertaining to information technology and its applications, and secondly the Infotech Exhibition which has become an annual feature providing an opportunity for the public to take stock of new developments in the fields of information technology and telecommunications.

8. Cabinet has taken note of the problems of hawkers and illegal hawking and has decided to set up of a Ministerial Committee to look into the matter with a view to finding sustainable medium and long-term solutions.

9. Cabinet has been apprised of the arrangements being made for the celebration of Divali at National level on Sunday 22 October at the Municipality of Quatre Bornes.

10. Cabinet has taken note that the Minister of Local Government, Rodrigues and Rural & Urban Development will attend the Festival Kréol scheduled to be held from 26 to 29 October in Rodrigues, in the context of the "Journée Internationale Créole". Various activities will be organised on that occasion.

11. Cabinet has been apprised of the proposal of the Minister of Women’s Rights, Child Development and Family Welfare to lead a delegation to Rodrigues from 21 to 22 October, 2000 with a view to identifying priorities with regard to services offered to women and children there and to formulate an Action Plan.

12. Cabinet has been apprised of the –
(i) reconstitution of the Board of the State Trading Corporation with Mr Eric Ribot as Chairman;
(ii) appointment of Mr Bhagwat Parsadsingh Daumoo as Chairman of the Mauritius Shipping Corporation Ltd; and
(iii) appointment of Mr N Beekarry, Acting Assistant Solicitor-General as Vice-Chairman of the Stock Exchange Commission
