Cabinet Decisions taken on 16 June 2000


1. Cabinet has agreed to the Ministry of Labour & Industrial Relations setting up an EPZ Labour Monitoring Mechanism. The mechanism will enable employees who have been laid off to easily find new employment in other industries, since the mechanism will act as a link between employers and employees in the EPZ sector.

2. Cabinet has agreed to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Corporate Affairs & Financial Services making regulations with a view to reducing the price of edible oil from Rs 3.45 to Rs 3.15 per quart, to be effective as from Saturday 17 June, 2000.

3. Cabinet has examined a report on the existing management contract between CWA and the consortium Lyonnaise des Eaux/Vivendi and noted that negotiations will be carried out with a view to finalising a long term strategic partnership. Cabinet will eventually be called upon to consider and approve the draft terms of an Agreement in that respect.

4. Cabinet has approved the grant of the following Industrial Investment Certificates under the Industrial Expansion Act, 1993:
2 Export Enterprise Certificates; and
2 Pioneer Status Enterprise Certificates.
·  The implementation of the four(4) projects would create some 68 job opportunities and would entail investment amounting to around Rs 19 M.

5. Cabinet has taken note of the decision of the Post Office Savings Bank to maintain its interest rate on savings at 8% per annum in spite of the reduction of 1.5% in the Lombard rate announced in the Budget Speech.

6. Cabinet has agreed to Mauritius ratifying the SADC Protocol on Immunities and Privileges. The Southern African Development Community would, after ratification, benefit from the privileges and immunities which are currently given to other regional and international organisations which have their Offices in Mauritius, such as the Indian Ocean Commission and the UNDP. Mauritius will also accept the SADC laissez passer as a valid travel document permitting visa free entry to staff members of the SADC Secretariat and SADC Commissions.

7. Government has agreed to Mon Désert Alma Ltd and Les Lycée Associés Ltd being authorised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Technology and Natural Resources to convert a portion of agricultural land at Helvetia for the setting up of a Lycée. The Lycée will accommodate a school population of about 500 aged between 15 to 18 years.

8. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the mission led by the Minister of Land Transport, Shipping and Port Development to Singapore from 20 to 27 May. The delegation held bilateral talks on the possibility of cooperation in the land transport sector.
