Cabinet Decisions taken on 18 August 2000


1. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the 20th Summit of the Southern African Development Community held on 6 and 7 August 2000 in Windhoek, Namibia. The Mauritian delegation was led by the Minister of Economic Development, Productivity & Regional Development. The Summit took note of preparations being undertaken for the implementation of the SADC Trade Protocol which will be effective as from 1 September 2000. The third prize of the SADC 2000 Essay Competition on HIV/AIDS was awarded to Mr Ashveen Kutowaroo of Sir Leckraz Teeluck State Secondary School who was selected from among 32 entries coming from eleven SADC member countries. During the Summit Meeting a Memorandum of Understanding between SADC and the Association of SADC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ASCCI) was signed. The seat of ASCCI is in Mauritius and the Chairperson is presently Mr Sayed Hossen.

2. In the context of the activities marking the centenary celebrations of Late Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, Cabinet has taken note of the construction of a green park to be named ‘Jardin du Souvenir’ at Kewal Nagar, Belle Rive.

3. Cabinet has taken note that the second carriageway between La Vigie and Nouvelle France roundabouts has been completed and will be open to traffic as from Saturday 19 August.

4. Cabinet has taken note that the Hire Purchase and Credit Sale (Amendment) Act, which was passed by the National Assembly on 1 August, will be proclaimed by Monday next, 21 August.
It will be recalled that the Act makes provision inter alia for the sale of specified goods to be effected only in strict accordance with the hire purchase and credit sale agreement, the charging of interests under the Annual Percentage Rate method and surcharge for the late payment of instalments.
Regulations to fix the Annual Percentage Rate and the surcharge will be made immediately after the proclamation of the Act.
