Cabinet Decisions taken on 20 October 2000


1. Cabinet has approved the measures to be taken by Mauritius in order to comply with the US Africa Growth and Opportunity Act and to derive full and effective benefits from it. The Minister of Industry, Commerce and International Trade will make the necessary Regulations to incorporate these measures.

2. Cabinet has agreed to the Ministry of Public Utilities hosting a Joint Lenders Meeting in November/December 2000 to seek funds for the Plaines Wilhems Trunk Sewer Project.

3. Cabinet has inter alia agreed to–
(a) the appointment of Mr Jean Philippe Couve de Murville as Chairman of the Central Water Board for a period of three years; and
(b) an amendment being brought to the CWA Act to enable a representative of the Trade Union to sit on the Central Water Board.

4. Cabinet has decided that two hours time off be granted to public officers and employees of parastatal organisations and local authorities of the Telugu Community on the occasion of Andhra Day on 1 November, 2000

5. Cabinet has approved the Programme of visit of Mrs Hennicot-Schoepges, Minister of Culture, Advanced Education and Research of Luxembourg, from 28 to 31 October. During her visit a Cultural Exchange Programme between Mauritius and the Grand Duché de Luxembourg will be signed.

6. Cabinet has taken note that Sunday 12 November 2000 will be observed as a Day of Remembrance for the two World Wars. A solemn ceremony is held every year, on this day, at the War Memorial in Curepipe, to remember those who lost their lives in the two wars. Remembrance Day will also be observed in Rodrigues.

7. Cabinet has taken note that the Government Actuary’s Department (GAD) of the UK will be requested to carry out the actuarial valuation of the National Pensions Fund and the National Savings Fund.

8. Cabinet has taken cognizance and approved the recommendations made by Dr Terence Murphy in his report on child protection in Mauritius. The above report follows a study carried out by Dr Murphy of the University of Tee Side, U.K., on child abuse. Among the measures proposed are the reinforcement of child protection services, the setting up of Regional Area Child Protection Committees and a Family Therapy and Treatment Unit, and development of a foster care system.

9. Cabinet has taken note of the participation of Mauritius in the 4th edition of the "Jeux de la Francophonie – Volet Culturel" from 14 to 24 July 2001, in Ottawa-Hull, Canada.

10. Cabinet has taken note of the implementation of the Bassin Requin Piggery Remedial Project. The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 4 million and consists of the setting up of a Waste Treatment plant at Bassin Requin Pig Farm, with four treatment units.

11. Cabinet has been apprised that the Millenium Monument at Wooton will be opened to the public as from 1 November 2000. The management of the Monument has been entrusted to the Mauritius Institute.

12. Cabinet has taken cognizance of the report of the Central Cyclone Committee and has approved the list of refugee centres and the measures to be taken for Cyclone Season 2000/2001.
