Cabinet Decisions taken on 28 January 2000


Cabinet has agreed to Mauritius signing on that occasion an Agreement for a line of credit for acquisition of a Coastal Surveillance System from India and several other Agreements relating to matters of common interest.

2. Cabinet has decided that henceforth the inhabitants of Agalega will be known as "Agalegans" and the French version being "Agaléens"

3. Cabinet has decided to set up a Ministerial Committee under the Chairmanship of the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs & International Trade to look into the organisational aspects of the Mahashivratree Festival.

4. Cabinet has agreed to the Ministry of Education & Scientific Research proceeding with the construction of sixteen Secondary Schools and four Secondary Vocational Schools on a Build, Lease and Transfer basis. The total estimated cost is Rs 700 M.

5. With a view to reduce expenses incurred in the operation of various Mauritian institutions overseas, it is proposed to house, wherever possible, the maximum of these institutions in a single complex. Institutions like MEDIA, MTPA and others are targetted. In this respect, Cabinet has agreed to the Management Audit Bureau undertaking a study on the rationalisation of utilisation of our overseas diplomatic/consular missions.

6. Cabinet has been informed that the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life will grant a Health Development Certificate to the ‘Nouvelle Clinique Ferriere’.

7. Following studies carried out on the functioning of the Forensic Science Laboratory and recommendations made thereafter, Cabinet has agreed to the Forensic Science Laboratory being detached from the Police Department and being made to operate as an autonomous department under the aegis of the Prime Minister’s Office with effect from the next financial year.
This arrangement would allow it to strengthen and restructure itself, and operate on a sound footing.

8. Cabinet has agreed to Mauritius hosting the Third Civil Aviation Committee Meeting of the Southern Africa Transport and Communication Commission (SATCC), from 19 to 21 April 2000. Issues relating inter-alia to Regional Co-operation proposals, Civil aviation policy, and Implementation of Communication, Navigation and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management systems will be discussed.

9. Cabinet has taken note of a proposal of the Minister of Industry, Commerce, Corporate Affairs & Financial Services to liberalise the price of coconut oil imported in bottles of 1 litre for cosmetic and religious purposes.

10. Cabinet has been apprised that the Millenium Monument at Wooton will be opened to the public as from 15 February 2000.

11. Cabinet has taken note of the reconstitution of the Mauritius Institute Advisory Council under the Chairmanship of Mr O. Lew Kew Lin for another period of two years.

12. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the participation of the mission of the Minister of Women, Family Welfare & Child Development to Oslo from 20 to 21 November, 1999.
