Cabinet Decisions taken on 02 March 2001


1. Cabinet has agreed to the introduction into the National Assembly of The Anti-Personnel Mines (Prohibition) Bill. The main object of this Bill is to prohibit the use, stockpiling or transfer of anti-personnel mines in fulfillment of obligations of Mauritius under the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction.

2. Cabinet has agreed to the extension of the existing Port Mathurin Power Station to meet future electricity demand in Rodrigues.

3. Cabinet has agreed to the Ministry of Public Utilities signing a Memorandum of Agreement with the Minerals and Energy Policy Centre of South Africa in the context of the OPET-SADC project for the promotion and exchange of information and expertise in the field of renewable, clean and efficient energy technologies.

4. Cabinet has agreed to the University of Mauritius hosting the 10th United Nations/European Space Agency Workshop in June 2001.

5. Cabinet has agreed to the re-deployment of excess teachers of private secondary schools to other areas in the Education Sector where there is shortage of staff.

6. Cabinet has agreed to the Ministry of Youth and Sports providing technical assistance to local authorities in the preparation and design of sports infrastructure projects.

7. Cabinet has agreed to the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with Mauritius Sports Council and the Municipality of Beau Bassin and Rose Hill organising a "Fête des Sports" from 17 to 21 April 2001 with a view to providing the youth with interesting activities during the Easter holidays.

8. Cabinet has agreed to the setting up of an Organising Committee under the Chairmanship of the Minister of Youth and Sports to look into the organisation of the Sixth Indian Ocean Islands Games scheduled to be held in Mauritius in August 2003.

9. Cabinet has taken note of the reconstitution of -
    1. the Irrigation Authority Board under the Chairmanship of
      Mr Premnath Jootun, for the year 2001/2002; and
    2. the Local Government Finance Board under the Chairmanship of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Rodrigues, and Rural & Urban Development.

10. Cabinet has taken note of the implementation of the West Coast Sewerage Project. The sewerage system will cover the region of Flic-en-Flac, Bambous and adjoining localities.

11. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of -
    1. the participation of the Minister of Tourism in tourism promotional campaigns from 8 to 15 February in the Czech Republic, the U.K., and Italy. The objective of the mission was to create in a timely manner, the awareness that Mauritius is a quality and exclusive destination to relevant target groups;
    2. the recent mission of a delegation led by the Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations to the International Labour Office (ILO) Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland;
    3. the mission of the Minister of Training, Skills Development and Productivity to Singapore and Malaysia from 11 to 18 February 2001. The main objective of the mission was to discuss possibilities of co-operation with those communities in the field of training;
    4. the Extraordinary Meeting of the "Commission Jeunesse et Sport de l’Ocean Indien" and the 28th Session of the CONFEJES Meeting which the Minister of Youth and Sports attended in Cairo from 16 to 17 February 2001; and
    5. the visit of a delegation led by the Minister of Youth and Sports to Rodrigues from 2 to 4 February 2001.

12. Cabinet has taken note of the state of play on SADC Trade Protocol which was launched on 1 September 2000 and aims at establishing a Free Trade Area in the SADC region.

13. Cabinet has noted that the Weight Training Room at the National Football Training Centre, Reduit will be named after late Mr Teckman Dwarka, as a gesture of goodwill for the valuable services rendered by him.

14. Cabinet has taken note of the holding of the first meeting of the "Conseil Permanent International des Iles" in Mauritius by the end of March 2001. The object of the meeting is to initiate preparations for the holding of the Indian Ocean Island Games in August 2003.

15. Cabinet has noted the judgement of the Court of Appeal and appeals to the Fijian authorities to return to constitutional and democratic rule quickly.
