Cabinet Decisions taken on 05th October 2001


1.         Cabinet has taken note of progress made by the public/private sectorCommittee set up to study the pre-feasibility report on the Special EconomicZone (SEZ) in Mozambique and has decided that the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance lead an Investment Partnership Mission to Mozambique to discuss the modalities and operation of the SEZ.

2.         Cabinet has agreed to Government initiating action including the introduction of anti-terrorism legislation, to implement Resolution 1373 (2001) adopted by the UnitedNations Security Council on 28 September with a view to combating international terrorism. In this connection, a Committee of senior officials has been set up to work out a Plan of Action taking into consideration all international conventions related to terrorism.

3.         Cabinet has agreed tothe Corporate Governance Unit of the World Bank’s Private Sector AdvisoryServices Division carrying out an assessment of corporate governance in Mauritius and making recommendations as appropriate.

4.         Cabinet has agreed to Mauritius making an annual contribution to the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group which is based in Tanzania.

5.         Cabinet has approved the grant of Export Service Certificates to four applicants for export andre-export activities, quality control and quality assurance services.

6.         Cabinet has agreed to the current visa regime of Mauritius being revisited with a view to streamlining the issue of entry visas to foreigners.

7.         Cabinet has agreed to –
(i)         the organisation of a National Sensitization Campaign on Occupational Safety and Health from 22 to 31 October 2001, by the Ministry of Labour and Industrial Relations, in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation, with a view to sensitizing employers and employees on the need for safety and health protection at work; and
(ii)        the holding of an African Regional Conference on Values Education organised by UNESCO/BREDA and the MIE, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Scientific Researchfrom 4 to 6 December 2001, with a view to facilitating educators of the Africa region to share experience and ideas on values education and empowering them to formulate strategies for the implementation of value based education.

8.         Cabinet has takennote of the coming into operation of the University of Technology of Mauritius (UTM)at Pointe aux Sables as from 28 September 2001 with some 460 students enrolled on the various programmes. TheUniversity proposes to broaden the spectrum of courses to meet demands while taking on board labour market requirements.

9.         Cabinet has takennote of the programme of activities to be organised on Friday 2 November 2001 tomark the 167th Anniversary of the arrival of Indentured labourers in Mauritius.
