Cabinet Decisions taken on 14th September 2001


1. Cabinet has agreed to the final Report on the Decentralised System of Government in Rodrigues which embodies the 'The Constitution Amendment Bill’ and 'The Rodrigues Regional Assembly Bill’, submitted by
Mr R. Ahnee, CSK, after taking on board the comments of stakeholders.

​ 2. In view of the considerable decrease inthe number of cases of adoption of Mauritian children by foreigners, Cabinet has agreed to the Prime Minister’s Office being entrusted with the responsibility of processing such cases. The National Adoption Council of the Ministry of Women's Rights, Child Development & Family Welfare would subsequently be dissolved.

3. Cabinet has agreed to Friday 5 October2001, being declared a school holiday for all teaching as well as non-teaching staff, of primary and secondary education institutions on the occasion of

4. Given the demand for reading materialsin French and the increasing interest for courses offered by “L’AllianceFrançaise” in Mauritius, Cabinet has agreed to the Ministry of Arts and Culture signing a “Convention de Financement” with the Government of the Republic of France for the implementation, in collaboration with “L’Alliance Française”, ofa project entitled ?Lire en Français a Maurice”. The Project aims at setting up a network of 75 reading centres in Mauritius, Rodrigues and Agalega with a view to promoting the French language by offering reading materials.

​5. Cabinet has agreed to a group of ten young Mauritians participating in the “Ship for the World Youth” programme organised by the Government of Japan as from October 2001. The programme will involve some 300participants from Japan and 14 other countries travelling on board a ship,visiting different countries and participating in youth exchange activities.

6. Cabinet has taken note of the TailoringTrade (Remuneration Order) Regulations which was being made by the Ministry of Labour & Industrial Relations to incorporate the recommendations made by the National Remuneration Board.

​7. Cabinet has taken note of the approvalof 28 applications for registration as Small and Medium Enterprises under theIndustrial Expansion Act 1993. The enterprises will be involved in the manufacture of ready-made garments,decorative glass items, gold and silver wares, furniture and cabinet wares and handicraft products. Investment will beto the tune of Rs 9.4 m and some 49 new employment will be created.

8. Cabinet has taken note of the constitution of the Travel Agents and Tour Operators Authority under the chairmanship of Mr Ah Kin Ip Kwok Sheung.

9. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the mission of -

(i) the Minister of Labour & Industrial Relations to Saudi-Arabia and Dubai from 27 August to 6 September 2001, where he had talks inter alia with the Haj Authorities on accommodation of pilgrims proceeding to Haj pilgrimage in 2002,and on tourism promotion and employment opportunities in the region; and

(ii) theMinister of Health and Quality of Life to Brazaville, Congo from 27 August to 1 September 2001, where he attended the 51st WHO Regional Meeting.

10. Cabinet has taken note of the participation of two young Mauritians in the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Forum to beheld in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia from 28 September to 8 October 2001. The object of the Forum is to allow youth to identify their vision for the Commonwealth in the 21st Century,address issues of concern to young people and to develop action plans to be implemented in their countries.
