Cabinet Decisions taken on 17th August 2001


 
1. In line with Government’s declared policy to develop the Port Louis Harbour into a modern, well-equipped and efficient port, Cabinet has agreed to the Cargo Handling Corporation Ltd entering into a strategic alliance with a partner of international repute and to the World Bank’s assistance being sought for consultancy services to provide the best guidance on the procedures of selection and the appointment of the partner.

2. Cabinet has taken note of the “Action Plan for Poverty Alleviation” prepared by the Trust Fund for the Social Integration of Vulnerable Groups in collaboration with NGOs, the Civil Society and the private sector and has agreed to a Committee being set up under the chairmanship of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance to monitor its implementation.

3. Cabinet has agreed to the STC importing our total requirements of LP Gas and to the arrangements made for its storage and distribution.

4. Cabinet has agreed to the construction of a warehouse for the storage of bagged sugar by the Mauritius Sugar Terminal at Fort William on a plot of land of about 4 hectares released by the Mauritius Ports Authority.

5. Cabinet has agreed to the terms and conditions applicable for the elimination of sugar estate camps and the rehousing of its dwellers being extended to the tea estate camp of Bois Cheri.

6. Cabinet has agreed, in principle, to the introduction of a Community Service Order Scheme whereby petty offenders will, instead of undergoing custodial sentence, be required to perform community service under the supervision of the Probation and After Care Service and to appropriate legislation being prepared in that respect.

7. Cabinet has agreed to the National Women Entrepreneur Council of Mauritius signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federation of Indian Women Entrepreneurs of India with a view to promoting co-operation and obtaining technical assistance in the field of women entrepreneurship development.

8. Cabinet has agreed to the new set of criteria to be adopted by the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life for assisting deserving patients who need to go abroad for investigation and treatment not available in Mauritius.

9. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the visit of the Minister of Social Security, National Solidarity & Senior Citizen Welfare & Reform Institutions to Agalega from 31 July to 2 August in the context of the anti-flu campaign and to Rodrigues from 3 to 5 August in connexion with the UN International Year of Volunteers.

10. Cabinet has taken note of the status of ongoing projects implemented by the NDU in various regions of the country.

11. Cabinet has taken note of the reconstitution of –
(i) the Road Transport Advisory Board under the chairmanship of Mr B. Bhardowaj;
(ii) the Dental Council of Mauritius; and
(iii) the Medical Council of Mauritius.

12. Cabinet has taken note of arrangements being made for the printing of primary school textbooks for the year 2002 to ensure timely distribution to students.

13. Cabinet has taken note of the recommendations made in the report of the security audit carried out by the University of Mauritius following the fatal accident which occurred on 25 June 2001 at the Lycée Polytechnique Sir Guy Forget, Flacq and of arrangement being made to improve security of students and staff.

14. Cabinet has taken note of the proposed visit to Mauritius of Hon. Ram Vilas Pawan, Minister of Communications of the Republic of India from 15 to 20 October 2001.

15. Cabinet has taken note of the activities organised and the measures taken by the Ministry of Civil Service Affairs and Administrative Reforms in the past six months in the context of the Civil Service Reforms and of its Action Plan for the year 2001-2003 which aims at creating a modern, efficient and productive Public Service.

16 Cabinet has taken note of the health hazards due to the use of asbestos(Amiante) and has decided that the assistance of the World Bank be sought for a comprehensive study.
