Cabinet Decisions taken on 18th May 2001


1. Cabinet has taken note of the composition of the Independent Broadcasting Authority under the chairmanship of Mr. Bhojendranath (Ashok) Radhakissoon and has agreed to the establishment of a broadcasting transmission company, known as the MultiCarrier (Mauritius) Ltd., with the exclusive right to carry on the business of terrestrial broadcasting.

2. Cabinet has taken note of the Staff Report of the IMF Article IV Consultation Mission which visited Mauritius in January/February this year and has agreed to its publication by the IMF.

3. Cabinet has agreed to the cancellation of the pre-selection exercise carried out in 1999 with respect to the Mauritius New Railway System Project.

4. Cabinet has agreed to the submission of the candidature of Mr. Robert Ahnee, CSK, for membership to the OAU Committee on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

5. Cabinet has agreed to the recommendations contained in the Report on Foreign Workers in Mauritius produced by the Ministry of Training, Skills Development and Productivity, being implemented and to the Report being made public.

6. Cabinet has taken note of the five projects approved by the Board of Investment since the coming into force of the Investment Promotion Act in March 2001. These projects relate to the setting up of a call centre and telemarketing services, two hotels and two regional headquarters. They will involve investments of some Rs 380m and provide employment to about 253 persons.

7. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of mission of a delegation led by –
(i) the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Co-operation to Pretoria on 11 May, 2001, where he participated in the Meeting of Ministers and Representatives of the Region and the OAU Troika, aimed at reviewing the working of the Framework Agreement for Reconciliations in the Comoros signed in February 2001; and
(ii) the Minister of Training, Skills Development and Productivity to Australia and New Zealand from 1 to 9 May 2001 where he discussed with the authorities the proposed setting up of a National Qualification Framework in Mauritius.

8. Cabinet has taken note of the reconstitution of the Executive Committee of the National Youth Council for the period May 2001 to April 2003, under the chairmanship of Mr. Navin Ramsoondur.
