Cabinet Decisions taken on 7th September 2001


​1. Cabinet has agreed to the incorporation of the 'New Co-operative Bank Ltd.” as a publiccompany with Government, the Development Bank of Mauritius, the SIT andco-operative federations and societies as shareholders.

2. With a view to reducing pollution caused by lead ejected into air by vehicule exhaust,Cabinet has agreed to the introduction of Unleaded Motor Gasoline (ULG) in Mauritius as from August 2002. Forvehicles imported prior to 1985 which cannot run on ULG, chemical additives would have to be mixed.

​3. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the mission of –

(i) the Minister of Agriculture, FoodTechnology & Natural Resources to Singapore and Australia where he took stock of developments in the field of biotechnology; and

(ii) the Minister of Training, Skills Development and Productivity, to Rodrigues from 27 to 28 August 2001, where he,inter alia, opened a workshop for employers on the importance of training.

4. Cabinet has taken note of the holding of the 3rd Board Meeting of the African Union of the Blind atGold Crest Hotel from 14 to 21 October 2001. The object of the organisation is to advocate a plan of action and policies for the benefit of blind people in Member States.

5. Cabinet has taken note of Regulations being made by the Minister of Social Security,National Solidarity & Senior Citizen Welfare and Reform Institutions toprovide for an increase in the rates of benefits payable under the National Pensions Act as announced in the 2001/2002 Budget Speech.

6. Cabinet has taken note of the proposed promulgation of the Environment Protection (Standards of Hazardous Wastes)Regulations 2001, which provide for a proper management of hazardous waste.

7. Cabinet has taken note of the setting up of a High Level Committee by the Ministry of Women’s Rights, Child Development & Family Welfare, to develop, in consultation with all stakeholders, a national integrated children’s policydocument for the promotion of welfareof children of 0 to 18 years and to design a national framework defining therole of all stakeholders.

8. Cabinet has taken note of the holding of Infotech 2001 by the National Computer Boardfrom 3 to 6 October 2001 at the International Exhibition Centre, Freeport of Mauritius, Mer Rouge, Port Louis.

9. Cabinet has taken note of the proposed visit to Rodrigues of the Minister of Youth andSports in the company of Mr Paul Arengo Jones, Secretary-General of the Duke ofEdinburgh’s Award International Association, to present badges to the Award Leaders who have completed a training course and to launch the activities of the Rodrigues Award Committee in the context of the Sub-Regional AwardConference for East Africa and Indian Ocean Countries presently being held inMauritius.
