Cabinet Decisions taken on 07 March 2003


1. Cabinet has taken note of the Programmes of Visits of -
(a) HE Mr Joaquim Alberto Chissano, President of the Republic of Mozambique from 11 to 14 March 2003; and
(b) HE Shri L.K. Advani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs of India from 24 to 27 March 2003.

2. Cabinet has agreed to a Committee being set up under the chairmanship of the Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity & Senior Citizen Welfare and Reform Institutions to draft a Bill on the protection of the elderly, which will provide inter alia for -
(a) the prevention of abuse and neglect of the elderly;
(b) inheritance and property rights;
(c) the compulsory support from adult children; and
(d) harsher punishment for criminal offences perpetrated against the elderly.

3.Cabinet has taken note that the Minister of Labour & Industrial Relations will make regulations for the incorporation of the recommendations of the National Remuneration Board relating to the blockmaking, construction, stone crushing and related industries sector.

4. Cabinet has agreed to the setting up of a Steering Committee on the provision of legal services to the Financial Services Sector, with a view to assessing and making recommendations on the legal needs of the Financial Services Sector, taking into consideration the implications of liberalising trade in legal services, in line with commitments taken at the level of the WTO.

5.Cabinet has agreed to the Minister of Commerce and Co-operatives making regulations to better control the importation and sale of second hand vehicles.

6. Cabinet has taken note that the fourth Commonwealth/World Trade Organisation Training Programme on Customs Valuation will be held in Mauritius from 17 to 28 March 2003. The training programme will provide an opportunity to the participants to share their experience and to identify ways to address issues relating to the implementation of the WTO Agreement on Customs Valuations.

7. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the mission of the Minister of Agriculture, Food Technology & Natural Resources to Brussels where he attended the ACP Sugar Enlarged Ministerial Bureau and to Paris and Geneva where he had discussions on the Sugar Regime.

   8. Cabinet has taken note that the official ceremony of the inauguration of the Midlands Dam will be held on 29 March 2003.

   9. Cabinet has taken note of the status of the “Report on the Observance of Standards and Codes” regarding accounting and auditing practices in Mauritius, carried out by the World Bank.

   10.Cabinet has taken note that the Export Processing Zone Labour Welfare Fund will organise an Open Day for EPZ Workers and their families on Saturday 26 April 2003 at Port Louis Waterfront.

   11.Cabinet has taken note that, on the recommendation of the Stamp Advisory Committee, a stamp will be issued to mark the golden jubilee of the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute.
