Cabinet Decisions taken on 12 September 2003


1.Cabinet has taken note of arrangements being made for the appointment of the Hon Paul Raymond Bérenger, GCSK, as Prime Minister and the election of Sir Anerood Jugnauth, KCMG, PC, QC as President of the Republic. On 15 September, Sir Anerood Jugnauth will make an announcement of his intention to resign as Prime Minister on 30 September 2003. The Swearing-in Ceremony of the new Prime Minister and the new President will be held at Sir Harilal Vaghjee Hall on 30 September and 7 October respectively.

2. Cabinet has agreed to -
(i) the recommendations made by Childnet International in its Report on Child Protection on the Internet in Mauritius; and
(ii) an Inter-Ministerial Committee under the chairmanship of the Minister of Information Technology and Telecommunications monitoring their implementation.

3. Cabinet has taken note that the Mauritius Ports Authority, in collaboration with the Association of Chagossians, will put up a stele at the landing site at Quay C in memory of the return of the last Chagossians in April 1973.

4. Cabinet has taken note of arrangements made for the organization of the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) Examinations from 20 to 23 October 2003, and for admission in Form I in 2004.

5. Cabinet has taken note that two additional Directors on the Board of Directors of the Rodrigues Educational Development Co. Ltd will be appointed from the Rodrigues Executive Council.

6. Cabinet has agreed to the implementation of the recommendations made by a Task Force set up to assess the situation in the pre-primary education sector in respect of planning, curriculum renewal and the regulatory framework.

7. Cabinet has taken note of developments made on the study on the Basic Retirement Pension Scheme to be undertaken in the context of the on-going pension reform.

    8. Cabinet has taken note of the participation of Mauritius in the Sixth International Abilympics to be held in Delhi, India from 23 to 29 November 2003.

9.Cabinet has taken note of the constitution of -
(a) the Committee of the Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund under the chairmanship of Mr B. Jhurry, MSK; and
(b) the Board of the Waste Water Management Authority under the Chairmanship of Mr J. P. Couve de Murville.

10. Cabinet has taken note of developments on the study for the review of the Investment Management and Portfolio Valuation of the National Pensions Fund and the National Savings Fund.

11. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the mission of the Minister of Economic Development, Financial Services and Corporate Affairs to Mozambique where he attended the Eighth Annual General Meeting of the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation held on 4 September.

12. Cabinet has taken note of the current situation in the training and redeployment of redundant workers of the EPZ.
