Cabinet Decisions taken on 04 June 2004


 
1. Cabinet has taken note of the recommendations of the PRB (Errors, Omissions and Clarifications) Report 2004 and has agreed to the implementation, in toto, thereof and to the release of the Report.

2. Cabinet has reviewed the situation regarding the organization of the SIDS Conference and has taken note that the proposed dates for the holding of the Conference from 10 to 14 January 2005 will be officialized following a Resolution by the UN to that effect. Cabinet has also taken note that the Minister of Environment and National Development Unit will represent Mauritius at a Special Ministerial Meeting of the G77 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its establishment in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 11 to 12 June 2004.

3. Cabinet has agreed to Mauritius acceding to the Convention of Antartic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and the Commission established under the said Convention. The basic aim of the Convention is to conserve marine living resources of the Southern Ocean.

4. Cabinet has taken note of the Report of UNICEF on the situation Analysis of Women and Children in Mauritius for the period 1998 - 2003 and has agreed that the Report be made public.

5. Cabinet has reviewed the preparations in the context of the Transit of Venus which will be observed on 8 June 2004 and has taken note that the grandson of Lord Lindsay who would be the special guest for the event will donate a telescope which would thereafter be placed at the Belmont Site. Scientists from NASA are also expected. Further, a campaign has been carried out to sensitize students on the need for the use of proper eye protection for viewing the eclipse.

6. Cabinet has agreed, in principle, to the setting up of the Professor Basdeo Bissoondoyal Trust Fund which will give due recognition to the contribution of Professor Bissoondoyal in the preservation and promotion of the culture, language and religion of the Indo Mauritian population and in the liberation of the country.

7. Cabinet has taken note with concern that some 125 Indian workers employed by Arvind Overseas Ltd have without notice stopped work on 2 June 2004 in the afternoon. The strike is still ongoing at the instigation of some trade unionists. Cabinet takes a serious view of the situation at a time when Government is sparing no efforts to attract foreign investors and to set up spinning mills.

8. Cabinet has taken note that the 2nd African Union Ministerial Conference on Drug Control will be held in Mauritius from 29 November to 4 December 2004.

9. Cabinet has taken note of activities being organized to mark the World Blood Donor Day 2004 which will be celebrated for the first time on 14 June 2004.

10. Cabinet has taken note of the positive outcome of the official visit of the Prime Minister to Mozambique from 26 to 30 May 2004. The objective of the visit was first and foremost to consolidate our historical and cultural ties with a country where originated the ancestors of a large segment of the Mauritian population, and secondly, to enlarge the scope of our economic cooperation with Mozambique and place this cooperation on a firm footing through the signature of relevant agreements. A number of issues of bilateral and regional interest was raised during the meeting the Prime Minister had with President Chissamo.

11. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the mission of -
(i) the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Regional Cooperation in Kigali, Rwanda from 24 to 28 May 2004 where he participated in the African Union Trade Ministers Meeting;
(ii) the Minister of Housing and Lands and Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises, Handicraft & the Informal Sector in Moroni, Comoros from 26 to 27 May 2004 where he attended the 20th Meeting of the Indian Ocean Commission Council of Ministers; and
(iii) the Minister of Arts and Culture to the People's Republic of China from 17 to 29 May 2004 where he signed an Executive Programme for the years 2004-2006 under the Cultural Agreement between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Mauritius.

12. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the mission of the Minister of Health and Quality of Life to Geneva from 14 to 22 May 2004 where he attended the following meetings:
(i) the Special Meeting of the African Union of Ministers of Health on 14 and 15 May;
(ii) the 39th Regional Health Ministers' Conference on 15 May;
(iii) the Pre-WHA Meeting of Commonwealth Health Ministers on 16th May; and
(iv) the 57th World Health Assembly Meeting from 17 to 22 May.
