Cabinet Decisions taken on 17 June 2005


1.Cabinet has taken note of the draft Resolution by India , Brazil , Japan and Germany for a permanent seat on an enlarged UN Security Council and of the request of India for Mauritius to co-sponsor the Resolution. Cabinet has noted that China was opposed to Japan 's candidature in view of its wartime history. Cabinet has agreed to vote in favour thereof and the Indian High Commissioner has been informed accordingly. Cabinet has taken note that the 25 co-sponsors include to date France and Madagascar
Further, Cabinet has also taken note of -
(a) a letter from the Japanese Embassy in Madagascar addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Regional Cooperation to enlist our support in favour of Japan; and
(b) the proposed visit of the Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister to Mauritius from 22 to 24 June 2005.

2. Cabinet has reviewed the situation regarding the EU Sugar Reform and has taken note of a letter addressed to the Minister of Agriculture, Food Technology and Natural Resources by Mrs Mariann Fischer Boel, EU Commissioner for Agriculture in which she has reiterated that the Commission would fully stand by its commitment to its ACP partners. Cabinet has further noted that the legislative text on the Reform of the EU sugar regime and proposals for accompanying measures would be tabled on Wednesday 22 June 2005 .

3. Cabinet has taken note of an article regarding an alleged opinion poll carried out by the Indian Intelligence (RAW) on the Mauritian National Assembly Elections which appeared in the 'News on Sunday' issue of 17 June 2005 and that the Indian High Commissioner has given the assurance to the Prime Minister that the content of the said article was unfounded.

4. Cabinet has taken note of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Mauritius Revenue Authority and eight Federation/Unions of Employees on 13 June 2005. Discussion between the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and the three remaining Federation/Unions are ongoing.

5. Cabinet has taken note that in the context of the School IT project, IT labs would be operational in a number of Government Primary Schools by the third week of July 2005, and that the Minister of Education and Scientific Research will proceed with the inauguration of the IT lab at the Pointe-aux-Sables Government Primary School on 29 June 2005.

6. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the Mission undertaken by Ambassador V.S. Makhan, Secretary for Foreign Affairs to the Republic of Zimbabwe from 19 to 20 May 2005, as special envoy of the Prime Minister in connection with the situation of farmers of Mauritian origin established in Zimbabwe . The Zimbabwean Government has agreed to give special consideration to the Mauritian farmers' case.

7. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the tenth Summit of the COMESA Authority of Heads of State and Government held on 2 and 3 June 2005 in Kigali , Rwanda . The Mauritian delegation to the Summit was led by HE Mr Raouf Bundhun, vice-president of the Republic.

8. Cabinet has taken note of the outcome of the mission of the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection to Cairo , Egypt from 5 to 9 June 2005, where he attended the 3 rd Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Conference of Ministers of Trade.

9. Cabinet has taken note that Mauritius will be a port of call for the 18 th ship for World Youth Programme in January/February 2006. The event is organized annually by the Government of Japan, and some 250 participants from Japan and 12 other countries are given the opportunity to visit different countries and participate in youth exchange activities with a view to promoting mutual understanding and friendship between the Japanese youth and those from other parts of the world.
