Cabinet Decisions taken on 9th November 2001


1. Cabinet has agreed to the introduction into the National Assembly of thefollowing Bills -
 
 
(i) The Constitution (Amendment) Bill and The Rodrigues Regional Assembly Bill which provide for a decentralized form of Government in Rodrigues and the establishment of a Rodrigues Regional Assembly; and
 
 
·  (ii) The Criminal Code (Amendment No 2) Bill 2001 which aims at amending the Criminal Code to provide for punishment for the unauthorised use of the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Mauritius, and for the ban of the sale of knives and any other sharp or offensive instrument in the open air.

 

 

2. Cabinet took note of the commendable operation carried out by the Acting Commissioner of Police, the Officers of the Flying Squad under the supervisionof Mr G. Soodeen, Superintendent of Police and
Mr K. Limbeea, Assistant Superintendent of Police and Officers of the ADSU onWednesday 7 and Thursday 8 November when about 15 kgs of heroin wereseized at Plaine Verte.

4. Cabinet has agreed to Mauritius signing the 1999 International Convention forthe Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism which provides for States Partiesto establish as criminal offences the unlawful and wilful provision orcollection of funds to be used to carry out terrorist acts_

5. Cabinet has agreed to Mauritius hosting, from 19 to 20 November 2001, a meetingof the Executive Committee of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA) toconsider Africa’s contribution to the “World Anti-Doping Agency” (WADA).

 

6. Cabinet has agreed to about 10 popular beaches in Rodrigues, commonly used bythe public, being declared as public beaches to enable the authority responsiblefor their management to upgrade the beaches and provide amenities, such as safevehicular access, parking and kiosks and other appropriate facilities to thegeneral public.

7. Cabinet has taken note of the approval of 20 applications for registration asSmall and Medium Enterprises as recommended by the Small and Medium IndustriesDevelopment Committee. The enterprises will be involved inter-alia in themanufacture of ready-made garments, furniture, fibre glass products, letterboxes, fabricated metal products, luminous and non-luminous signs, and thepreparation of confectionary, pastries, fancy bread, ice cream and chocolates. The total investment will be to the tune of Rs 6.3 m and some 23 new employmentopportunities will be created and 78 existing jobs sustained.
