Cabinet has taken note that confirmation has been received that the construction of the International Conference Centre at Pailles which has been delayed due to persistent inclement weather conditions which have prevailed over Mauritius since the beginning of the year will be ready by mid-September 2004. Consequently, Cabinet has decided to request the United Nations to postpone the International Meeting on the Comprehensive Review of the Barbados Programme of Action for Sustainable Development of Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) to a date after Mid-September 2004. The matter will be raised by Ambassador J.D. Koonjul with the UN officials in New York today.
A second UN Planning Mission will be in Mauritius in June 2004 in connection with the organization of the Conference.
Cabinet has also decided that the SIDS Conference will not be financed from Government Budget and costs will be reviewed and trimmed down to the maximum.
