Cabinet Decisions taken on 09 April 2004


 
1. Cabinet has taken note of the highly successful visit of the Prime Minister who led a delegation comprising six Ministers to Madagascar from 4 to 7 April 2004. The full details of the visit will be circulated at the next Cabinet Meeting.

2. Cabinet has reviewed the situation regarding the computation of Asian Languages/ Arabic for the 2004 Certificate of Primary Education, and has agreed to a formula which will be presented separately to the "Front Commun pour les Langues Orientales" and the "Plate-forme pour la comptabilisation des langues orientales au CPE sans injustice" by the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Education and Scientific Research, this afternoon.

3. Cabinet has taken note that the Second Annual Summit of the National Economic and Social Council (NESC) will be held on Thursday 15 April 2004 at Hilton Hotel, Flic en Flac under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister. A wide cross-section of civil Society, including Ministers, Members of the National Assembly, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Consulates, Heads of Ministries and Para-statal bodies, representatives of the Private Sector, Trade Unions, NGOs, Academia and the Media has been invited to participate in the debates.

Further, a public lecture on "Social Observatory in Mauritius" will be given by Professor Roger Jowell, Director of the Centre for Comparative European Social Surveys in the United Kingdom on Friday 16 April 2004 at the Social Security House.

4. Cabinet has agreed to the introduction of the Bus Industry Employees Welfare Fund (Amendment) Bill into the National Assembly with a view to inter alia providing for an increase in the number of employees on the Bus Industry Employees Welfare Fund Board from two to four.

5. Cabinet has agreed that a letter on intent be issued by the Board of Investment to:
(i) Medine SE Co Ltd. in respect of the Mamet Integrated Resort Project at Wolmar; and
(ii) CIEL Group in respect of ANAHITA Sea, Villas and Golf Project at Beau Champ.

6. Cabinet has reviewed progress in Comoros and has taken note that the situation following the General Elections in the three autonomous islands is calm. The "Comité de Suivi International" will meet on Monday 12 April 2004 and Mauritius will be represented by Hon M. Arunasalon.

7. Cabinet has taken note of the participation of the Mauritian delegation led by the Deputy Prime Minister in the panel set up by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in the context of the Challenge by Brazil, Australia and Thailand to the EC Sugar Regime held in Geneva from 30 March to 1 April 2004 and his meeting with EU Commissioner F. Fischler in Italy on 2 April 2004.

8. Cabinet has taken note of the following meetings to be hosted by Mauritius -
(i) a "Réunion régionale de réflexion et de concentration sur les politiques linguistiques, l'aménagement des langues et l'enseignement du Français organised by the "Agence Intergouvernementale de la Francophonie" in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research from 20 to 23 April 2004;

(ii) a seminar on "Facilitation of Regional Trade by Harmonised Customs Instruments" organised jointly by InWEnt of Germany, the SADC Secretariat and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development from 29 July to 4 August 2004; and
(iii) the Second "Assemblée des Instituts Francophones des Droits de l"Homme, de la Démocratie et la Paix" in September 2004.
